612 SADDLING THE WILD HORSE Andy Spellman, "Bronc Buster," Ekalaka, Montana L.A. Huffman is recognized today as the most important photographer of the 19th century American cowboy. His images of this by-gone era have endured and his photo of "Saddling the Wild Horse" has become an American icon. Huffman, who practiced his trade out of Miles City, Montana, solicited the well known bronco buster, Andy Spellman, to rope, bridle, blindfold, saddle and then try to ride this gray monster. Huffman made the picture at the exact moment Spellman gave the first pull at the latigo, cinching the saddle. Photograph by Laton A. Huffman, 1894
