98 SATANTA, Set-tainte, Kiowa Chief (1830-1878) Satanta or White Bear, perhaps the most famous Kiowa chief, was known as the "Orator of the Plains." He participated in the Medicine Lodge Treaty of 1867, yet he continued to fight against White incursions, for which he was eventually imprisoned. This proud, dignified and daring warrior did not adjust to life behind bars and committed suicide by jumping out of a prison window in Huntsville, Texas on October 11, 1878.
