CHIEF JOSEPH, Nez Perce (1840-1904) One of the most respected Indian leaders of the 19th century, Chief Joseph was best known for leading his people on their epic journey, covering 1700 miles and standing off the U.S. Army time and time again until they could "fight no more forever".
