177 GALL, "Pizi," Hunkpapa Sioux Chief (c. 1838-1894) Gall was Sitting Bull's adopted brother and one of the few Indians for which the army offered a bounty; Gall was bayoneted by soldiers from Fort Berthold and left as dead. He recovered from his wounds and led his people to triumph within the valley of Little Bighorn where Custer and the Seventh Cavalry were defeated June 25, 1876. Photograph by George W.
