104 CHIEF JOSEPH, "Hanmaton Yalatkit", Nez Perce (c.1832-1904) Although an advocate of peace and co-existence with the white man, Joseph was forced from his native homeland in 1877, leading 750 of his people on a three month, 1300-mile fight, defeating the U.S. Army 7 seven major battles before being captured by Gen. Miles within 40 miles of the Canadian border and sanctuary, where he envisioned joining Sitting Bull and his exiled people. This is the first known photograph of Chief Joseph, taken within weeks of his capture. Photograph by O.S. Goff, 1877
