83 CROW FLIES HIGH, Hidatsa Chief (1830-1899) Having survived the devastating small pox epidemic of 1845 and the continual warfare with the Sioux and Blackfeet, Crow Flies High became the first chief of the Xosh-gah, Hoshita Band from 1869-1894. He led a band of Upper Missouri Indians drawn from the Hidatsa, Gros Ventre, Mandan and Arikara in the multi-cultural settlement at Like-a-Fishhook Village--Garden Coulee site--on the Missouri River.
