204 JOSEPH, (c. 1832-1904) Hinmaton Yalatkit, Nez Perce
Chief Joseph was a peace-minded, eloquent political leader and acclaimed military genius. In 1877 he led 750 of his people in a 1300-mile retreat, defeating the U.S. Army in 7 major battles before surrendering to General Nelson Miles within 40 miles of the Canadian border’s sanctuary, where he hoped to join Sitting Bull’s band.
